Justice League: Snyder Cut starring Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot, and Henry Cavill, was released in theatres and HBO Max on March 18th, 2021. It was given a rating of 8.3 by IMDB and a 73% by rotten tomatoes. This four hour long movie is full of action and adventure.
The original Snyder cut of Justice League was originally set to be released in 2017 but due to the death of his daughter, Autumn, Snyder had to leave the production and Warner Bros put up Joss Whedon in charge of post-production. Fans were disappointed with how the Whedon cut came out and kept pushing Warner Bros to release a Snyder version. Eventually, Warner Bros complied. At the end of the film, Snyder put a Memoriam for his Daughter and peppered the film with the number for the Suicide Hotline.
The film starts slow, but only because we get more insight into characters like Cyborg (Ray Fisher), Flash (Ezra Miller), and Steppenwolf. In this cut we get more background on Cyborg’s past like his relationship with his father, and the catastrophic accident that led to him becoming a Cyborg. For Flash, we meet his love interest Iris West, from the comics, and get to see his full potential at the end of the film. For Steppenwolf we get a complete redesign of him and see a completely different side of him.
Although most of the scenes from the 2017 version are reused in the Snyder cut with reworked or minor changes, Snyder does add in another villain, Darkseid, who becomes a driving force for Steppenwolf, the only villain in the 2017 cut. The intentions of Steppenwolf are clarified in this film as well. In the Snyder Cut we understand why Steppenwolf is collecting “three mother boxes,” ultimately opening up a portal for Darkseid’s attack on the planet and proving his worth to the villain. In the Snyder Cut, Snyder opens up the possibility for two more Justice League movies, one being the return of Darkseid, and the other taking place in a post-apocalyptic war, that would be similar to End Game.
For those that read the DC comics you can expect to see a lot of little “easter eggs” in the movie from various comic books. Overall the Snyder Cut is, in my opinion, a major upgrade from the 2017 version. Ultimately, the film was more serious in nature, which worked in it’s favor. If you’re a DC fan, this move is best watched with friends. Also, don’t forget to stock up on snacks and maybe order a pizza…. it’s a four hour movie.
