The Ironwood Ridge Highschool Girls golf team has earned elite status in the state of Arizona and in the nation. It began when in 2018 the Girls Golf team was the runner up in the Division 2 State Championship. Coming that close and losing was motivation because the next year a young girls golf team with freshman Zoe Newell, sophomore Hannah Ports, junior Celia Schrecker, and sophomore Raina Ports won the 2019 Division two Arizona state title.
Then that following summer the team went up to North Carolina to partake in a tournament at the Pinehurst Golf Course representing the state of Arizona. They ranked third in the nation. Hannah and Raina Ports both had great rounds shooting “even par” and tying for 5th place in the field of 95 golfers. This 2020 season they went undefeated in match play, and they finished 2nd in the state preview tournament in Phoenix, only losing to the Division one state champions.
Then on November 3rd, the Girls Golf team won another Division 2 State title. The Girls Golf team follows the motto “W.A.R,” which means, “we are ready”, and they indeed were. With Hannah Ports, Raina Ports and Zoe Newell finishing tied for 2nd in state and Celia Schrecker placed 9th it was an outstanding team effort to secure another State title.
When asking Hannah Ports how it felt to win another State title she said “It felt really good winning back to back years against our rivals, Cactus Shadows. Being able to win state at our home course is also really special”
After talking to the players just a couple days after winning a state title. The coaches and players were already thinking about winning their 3rd state title in a row next year. After asking Hannah Ports what she will do to prepare for next season she said “ To prepare for next year we are practicing everyday and playing in tournaments outside of high school golf.” This team is determined to win another title and with highlighted star players Raina Ports, Hannah Ports, and Zoe Newall returning next year and now with more experience it will be hard to stop them from winning another State title.
