Students may have seen the “Stop the Prop” signs posted around the PE building this school year. The signs were put there because too many students were using the doors improperly. There was a national stop the prop campaign, but Mr. Frederiksen said, “I don’t know that I would deem it a campaign.” With the national campaign not being involved in the signage, why are the signs being posted now?
Mr. Frederiksen said, “we needed to have increased signage on campus… it really was a safety issue because if those doors were propped open, we have no clue who’s coming or going on the campus.” Mr. Frederiksen mentions the gym doors, saying they are really hard to manage. He also explains, “students were treating it as an entrance and it’s a safety issue… We would walk as an admin team in the mornings, it’d be rocks propped on whether they’re big rocks in the way or small ones.” When questioned , the reason why students prop the doors open, Mr. Frederiksen says , “Easy access if somebody forgot their ID.” when entering campus.
Some students might be thinking how this will affect school events? Mr. Frederiksen responded to this situation with, “there’s really no reason those doors need to be open and if somebody truly does need into that building, there’s a keypad right next to it that they have access to.” He also mentions that there are guards at the doors, saying, “we have security staff working there, administrative staff are here, we have the school resource officers.” Mr. Frederiksen stated that this is not a new rule but “a visual reminder”
In conclusion, students should not be entering and exiting the school campus through unauthorized exits. Our administration team spends time to make sure our campus is safe, but by using the gym doors, students are destroying the well-being of our school. Safety is a big responsibility and one of the first steps to honoring our protection is by following the rules.
