Softball Coach David Martinez: Q & A

Q: How do you feel about going into this season, and why?

A: “I feel good about this season because we have some very good young talent returning and some great Senior leadership.”

Q: What precautions will your team be taking due to covid?

A: “We will follow all the guidelines set by the District and the AIA. Masks and hand sanitizer will be required at all practices and games.  The girls play travel ball year-round, so some precautions were already in place, so it won’t be a problem.”

Q: Will masks be mandatory on the field?

A:“The masks were required for games during the season, however, the AIA rescinded that rule , so the players on the field can be maskless, but everyone in the dugout and all coaches must still wear a mask.”

Q: Will parents and siblings be allowed to go to the games? If so will they be able to go to away games as well?

A: “Parents are allowed at the home games and only at away games that schools allow visiting fans to attend.

Q: How do you think the girls will respond to these precautions?

A: “The girls play travel ball year-round, so some precautions were already in place, so it won’t be a problem.”

Q: Do you feel confident your team will still be able to dominate with all of the changes going on?

A: “We feel like our expectations never change , we will compete every day at practice and every game to reach our goal of playing and winning the State Championship.”

Q: Will you have to talk to the other coaches to discuss their precautions so that their team feels safe? Or will everyone be doing the same thing?

A: “All schools must follow the guidelines set by the AIA and their own School Districts.”

Q: What do you believe is the greatest challenge most athletes face today?

A: “Well, the biggest challenge most young athletes face today is the amount of pressure they put on themselves and from parents to be successful and the feeling of letting their parents down if they have a bad game.”

Q: How do you respond if someone on your team doesn’t have a good attitude?

A: “As a staff we constantly talk to the team about having a great attitude because it can affect everyone around you. We talk to girls individually if we see or hear anything that does doesn’t seem right. We talk about leaving outside distractions at the gate to the field so that we can just practice or play freely and not be concerned with outside distractions.”

Q: What is your favorite sports quote and why?

A: “I have a few favorite quotes, but I do say this one a bunch because it’s simple but carries a ton of weight. “Control your controllables, ATTITUDE, EFFORT and ENERGY””

Q: What do you think is the most important thing that makes a team successful, why?

A: “Teams that are successful have a complete trust in each other and in their coaches. They know that everyone is doing their best for the team and will sacrifice for the good of the team.”

Q: If your team could describe you with one word what do you think they would say and why?

A: “Passionate,  because the TEAM and PROGRAM mean so much to me . I have been at IRHS since the first Varsity team played and I am so proud of what the girls past and present have built here and the legacy for future teams to live up too!! I am so proud of the girls that have played here and go on to have successful careers in and out of softball and when they reach out to me and ask how the team is doing or when they congratulate us on winning a Championship it means everything, we did at IRHS Softball was meaningful and worth it!!!”
